The National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Liberia have signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA) to strengthen institutional and operational capacities with a view to reducing food insecurity and improving access to nutritious food in Liberia.
The LoA, which is expected to fund the development of a five-year Strategic Plan (SP) for NFAA, was entered into by the two institutions on Wednesday (January 21, 2026) at the One UN House in Sinkor, Monrovia.
According to the terms of the agreement, FAO will pay the Service Provider, hired by NFAA for the development of the SP, and help improve institutional and operational standards for emergency food assistance response.
Moments after signing the document, DG Borkai A.M. Sirleaf thanked FAO Representative in Liberia, Mr. Saeed Abubakar Bancie, for continued partnership with government to improve food security and nutrition in country. He then assured the rest of FAO staff in Liberia, whose meaningful inputs culminated into the consummation of the agreement, of NFAA’s preparedness work with them in related ventures.
The outcome of the LoA aligns with the country’s Development Plan (ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development) specifically under Pillar 2 which underscores Economic Transformation and Strategic Policy 1 – focusing on enhancing food and nutrition security and resilience.
