“TIMELY AND STRATEGIC” – Minister of Foreign Affairs Describes NFAA’s Visit To MFA

(Monrovia, March 26, 2025) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Sara Beysolow Nyanti, has termed a 25-minute discussion with management team from the National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA) as timely and strategic on accounts of institutional visibility and recognition.

Minister Nyanti made the assertion Wednesday when she received a three-member team headed by Hon. Borkai A.M. Sirleaf, Director General of NFAA.
Stressing the issue of recognition for relevant government entities, the minister said she knew nothing about the existence of such vibrant institution of government as the National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA) which, according to her, could have managed and distributed several foreign-donated food consignments to the country in keeping with its mandate.

She however assured the NFAA team of the agency’s active future involvement in managing and distributing donated food commodities from foreign sources, especially portion of the commodities meant for food assistance to the needy population of the country. “With this crucial visit you’ve made, we will now keep you in mind as we are now your partners in progress going forward, Minister Nyanti further assured.

The Wednesday visit, among other things, brought to the fore issues about the continued existence of NFAA since the 1970s as a government entity with the mandate to lead and coordinate efforts between the Government of Liberia and relief agencies such as the UN/WFP, FAO, UNDP, etc. to provide a sustainable and reliable food security and nutrition systems through the establishment of regional food hubs, thereby making school feeding and other feeding programs sustainable across the country and tackle hunger through the Home-Grown Feeding Approach.

The visiting team then expressed the agency’s interest to continually be a part of the management and distribution of foreign food donations to Liberia in order to fully deliver on NFAA’s statutory food assistance mandate. The team, through the Director General, also called on the Minister to link the agency with some international food assistance partners for international engagements to boost efforts aimed at ensuring food security in alignment with the national development agenda – the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).

Other members making up the NFAA visiting team to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were Hon. Bob Yeenuah Kartoe, Deputy Director General for Administration and Mr. R. Webster Nyian, Public Relations and Communications Officer.
